Ok... after several prods from a few unmentionables, I figured I better
write a few things to quiet the angry natives.
After graduation I went to Eastern New Mexico University to start a
degree in graphic design. I studied hard and played a lot and had a
helluva time doing it. My junior year I went to CSU Fresno on exchange
and experienced "big campus" life which was a pretty interesting
contrast from little ol P-Ville. Somewhere along the way I started
falling from perfectly good airplanes on a regular basis so that has
been my weekend shtick ever since then as just a jumper and now as a
videographer and tandem/AFF instructor.
After reading several of the posted bio here I noticed a few things...
everyone seems to have gone and got married at least once and had a few
kids and gotten into a comfortable lifestyle. Frankly, that's awesome.
Sometimes I wish that life had been mine... but then again... I wouldn't
trade all the experiences and whatnot I've had thus far either.
Having said that... there have been a few leading ladies along the way
but I guess I'm too picky or something to have actually participated in
the vows of marriage.
After spending some time doing some work on a masters degree,
bouncing/DJing at a local bar and playing radio DJ in Clovis, NM I was
offered a job with the New Mexico Retail Association as Membership
Director and Lobbying Assistant for large and small retail businesses I
moved to Santa Fe. As a Lobbying Assistant I had the opportunity to work
with lawmakers both in New Mexico and on Capitol Hill in regards to
programs and laws surrounding healthcare and other business specific
rules and regulations. After a couple years in Santa Fe I moved to
Albuquerque to the NMRA office there and spent 2 move years discovering
just how ugly the political underbelly can be.
In 1996, I ended my tenure at NMRA and decided to go back to my roots
in graphic design by taking a job in Perris, CA working for a skydiving
equipment dealer/manufacturer building websites and managing their
advertising and product catalogs. It was nice to start the day with a
skydive as all employees of the dropzone and integral businesses were
allowed to make the first load of the day for free. I built up my
experience and started skysurfing under the tutorial of Troy Hartman
(X-Games champ and host of MTVs Senseless Acts of Video). I started
training to hopefully get a slot in the X-Games but was cut short with
the elimination of the event from the games. During this time I began to
do freelance graphic design within the skydiving industry and it soon
became more profitable than my 9 to 5. So I opted to go into business
for myself full time and make my former full-time employer a client.
Not too long afterwards, a fledgling company, Go Fast Sports in
Denver, CO asked me if I would be interested in moving to Denver to take
over the advertising and marketing in return for a share of the company
ownership. Go Fast Sports started making waves in the action/extreme
sports arenas with t-shirts and stickers. One of the highlights was
doing the t-shirts for President Bush Sr. 75th birthday skydive and
celebration in College Station, TX where I was able to really spend some
time with him, Barbara and former Chairman of the Join Chiefs Hugh
Shelton in a more personal setting. The whole event was an eye-opening
experience from a lot of different perspectives... lots' of good stories
to tell.
While I was an owner of Go Fast it was becoming evident that the
potential of the company was much larger than originally projected.
After a few years or butting heads between myself and the other owners,
I decided to bow out and become a contractor to the company instead
leaving me to continue to work with Go Fast but also to expand my own
thing.
After leaving Go Fast I returned to Albuquerque both the rekindle a
relationship with an old girlfriend and also refocus on building my
business, MG Creative. After changing my status with the company Go Fast
is now an up and coming maker of energy drinks (like Red Bull) and I
have had the opportunity to become a part of a vast selection of
projects. I was involved in the first privately sanctioned rocket launch
into outer-space, several productions of Stunt Junkies stunts on
Discovery Channel and built relations with some of action sport's more
common names like US skier Bode Miller, Luigi Cani, Warren Miller skiing
star Chris Anthony, Luxembourg pro skier Marcel Buchel and freestyle
motocross standout Chuck Carothers by doing artwork, t-shirts, logos and
various advertisements for them.
Currently, I am living and working in Albuquerque, NM. In between
business trips to various places across the world, I spend quite a bit
of time teaching both tandem and Accelerated Freefall skydiving at a
small dropzone school in Belen. When I'm not out at the dropzone or
working in my studio, I spend time with my girlfriend Angie and her 6yo
son JJ, work on the house or head off to the mountains to ride my
motorcycle. Recently I have started painting again and doing more fine
art in what's left of my free time.
I enjoyed the 10th reunion and thought it was a hoot... so I'll be back
for the 20th. Anyone up for some good single-malt scotch?
